Ugly
Dear Journal ,
What is the meaning of being different? Everyone has their own definition but mine is to be completely opposite from the ordinary person and being your own person. Some people don't think it is okay to be different from everyone else because you are considered weird. In my opinion, I think it perfectly fine if people don't agree with things you do, how you dress, what you say, or anything that makes you you. For Robert, it was a challenge being different from the day he was born. In the memoir, Ugly by Robert Hoge, he describes his struggles that he had growing up.
When Robert was a fetus, his mother took some medication that made her baby mutated. Robert had one leg that was shorter than the other and didn't have a foot. His face was spread out to a point where severe surgery was needed. He needed a completely new nose constructed for him.
p.s- this is my new independent reading book
When Robert was a little older, the legs he had weren't working so well so they amputated both and they gave him prosthetics.
This story gives brief stories about his challenges he had to overcome such as learning how to swim and ride a bike. One of the biggest problems Robert faced was making friends. Because of his physical setbacks and differences from other people, it was not easy for him to make friends. There was one child in his grade in school that he made friends with almost instantly and his name was David. He also had three girl neighbors that played with him all the time. Other than those four friends, Robert wasn't liked by others.
This is book is amazing and I recommend it to all of my friends.
